Repost Warning:

"Hi Paul,

First off welcome to our little forum gathering. I would believe most or all of us that opperate a commercial outdoor movie event are and have been doing our due diligence to keeping within licensing standards. I do feel that stating that things are getting stricter doesn't do our industry any better. Yes there will be occasions that public individuals will break the copyright laws showing movies at a school or park but legal operators like us should not be held accountable since we need the ability to offer the client's desired movie for their event. I have had to suggest alternative movies aside from Disney or Miramar because of those restrictions. I would suggest if there is going to be a commercial association for outdoor movie company it should be more for fighting our ability and benefit to showcase movies from distributors such as Disney. Thanks."

I have no vested interest in this matter as my intentions to go commercial.  However, I find it a bit disturbing that soc2008 can't even keep the name of this own organization straight:

Association of Professional Outdoor Movie Operators
  Association of Outdoor Cinema Operators

Which is it?  Really?  Credibility slipping here...

I'm, surprised its taken this long for a professional organization to be created. Though the number of operators at SOC2008 level are relatively small, you then have a moderate number in the mid size range and a ton of small residential only companies.  So the number of folks that are going to be interested in something like this is going to be small, I'm guessing.

As others have asked, is there a website, who are this organizations current members, who comprises the board, etc.

I am a little put back as well that it's taken so long for a group to be formed but also uneasy that the meeting won't take place until March 2011. I aplaude Sarge's cynicism to this announcement (loved the outlaw quote) and wonder if a group like this is going to be going around the neighborhood stopping us from showing movies for friends since we don't own the property which ensures that they are the only ones allowed to show BYT. The folks here that do it professionally have always told all members that if you need to adhire to the laws when you leave the backyard. I have been lurking for almost two years and didn't care for the accusations. On the other hand I also would like to hear more from soc2008 and thought more of you have fished before (never yank the first time you feel a nibble). I haven't been able to find more on this new association than what I have heard here!

I just looked at SOC website and have to laugh, I recently mentioned to Glen about "borrowing" photos for websites and alas soc2008 seems to have borrowed at least one from this site under the heading "examples of bad screens"

Anyway I am 100% behind this idea, I think its vital that as many get involved as possible. Through numbers we can form an alliance so that both the film companies and the outdoor exibitors can grow and profit.

Wow....  I looked at the Examples of "Bad" screens.  I think taking someone's backyard outdoor screen that he/she uses for a hobby/fun and making a comparison is tacky, rude and not even fair.  I am surprised mine didn't get an honorable mention....to which I would have promptly printed and documented the site and hired a lawyer.

Thanks...it serves my purpose here.  No way would I take it out of my yard for professional reasons.  But the people that throw a sheet up on a wall for fun should not be slammed.  If it suits their needs and they have fun....there ya go!

I just think that guy needs to remove his comparison as it is not apples to apples....and using someone Else's image without permission is wrong.
