What are any regulations about showing a movie to a group?  Our neighborhood wants to do an outdoor theater.  Can we rent a DVD at Blockbuster (or other) or do we have to go through a distributor.  If I own the DVD, can I show it to the group--maybe 100 people?  Someone told me I could be fined $15,000 if I did. Thanks.

Owning the DVD doesn't help with licensing to show it.  Here's a snippit :

"Videos may be shown without a SEPARATE license in the home to “a normal circle of family and its social acquaintances” (Section 101) because such showings are not considered “public.”

More info: http://www.mplc.com/aboutLaw.php

It's smart that you're looking into this if you're getting into large groups and possibly people you don't know.  Also if you're projecting in public areas.

Any showing you do to more then just yourself or the household, requires you to have a public performance licences, I am currently looking into this since I live in the city and dont want to get caught, LOL.. I did find a site were you can get new releases, and they also have info about the licences here.

I dont want to sound like a push over but getting cought just scares the crap out of me and would rather aguire the licence and show my collection of dvd leagly.

Thanks
