Hello!

As we had about 10" of snow on the ground this past Thursday I wanted to post the new speakers in action last July when it was GREEN.  Fortunately, the snow is almost all gone today.

Here's to a great season for all!

Impressive set-up OutdoorGeek! Love the speaker enclosures as well. Nice job on those.

What video is being shown in the last picture?

everette,

Thanks for the kind words.  Here's a chuckle for you; the video is one of the random, swirling screen saver patterns on Windows Media Player as the pre-show audio was playing.  Smiley  Yes, it did look like blurry shapeless blob!

Hello all,

Tronn inspired me so here is another update...

I finally purchased a calibrated measurement microphone (EMX-7150) to finalize the speaker crossovers.  I performed open field measurements (frustrating finding a decent day here in MN this "spring") as I do not have access to an anechoic chamber.  Mic placement is still closer to the speaker than ideal but necessary to mitigate ground reflection and outdoor ambient noise.  I'm certain the neighbors wondered what the repeated rising tone was all about, but I kept the level as low as I could and still get reasonable measurements...

At any rate, after a couple crossover tweaks, the swept frequency response measured within +/- 2dB from 132Hz to 16KHz.  The horn drops off very quickly above 16KHz, in agreement with the data sheet.

The red curve at the bottom is the correction factor that has been applied inclusive of the individually serialized microphone calibration file; and measured data for the mic preamp, power amp, and all cabling.

Needless to say, I'm quite pleased with the performance as they sound as good as one would expect given the flat response.  I will be crossing over to the 18" JBL's at around 140Hz.  The theoretical response for the 18" cabinet is flat down to 22 Hz but I have yet to measure it.

Cheers!
Eric

That's a nice, flat frequency response.  Good job.  It will be interesting to see the chart of the subs overlaid with that one.  Smiley

That first photo of your speakers in this thread reminds me of ancient sacred grounds with three huge megalithic monuments.

I think you should call your backyard theater "ConeHenge".  Wink

We had a change of plans, but still had a fabulous evening!  Although the weather was post card perfect (75 & sunshine, almost no bugs), Alison Scott was unable to perform due to illness (we missed you, Alison!).  However, Ellis was in town and able to rearrange her day to share her music with us.  We enjoyed lots of new songs in addition to many familiar favorites.  This sunshine and green foliage will sustain us through the off season!

Hello!

Here are a couple clips from our concert/movie event for 2014.  The camcorder was bolted to the deck, about 40 feet from the stage, with the lens zoomed in.  Please excuse the built-in-microphone camcorder audio; hopefully you'll get an idea anyway.  (It sounds less bad on headphones.)

We ended with torch lighting!

Likely done for the season but will be back next year!

Gives me some ideas too!  We are a "theatrical" family. (Actors, Directors, my wife is one of the Production Manager for the Cleveland Playhouse Square).

And all I'd need to do is put up a little stage, maybe some lights, and voila!

A location for dinner, a show and a movie nights!

What a GREAT idea!  And it looks like you're having so much fun too.

Thanks, I may be stealing this one for next season.  Getting kinda cold here in Ohio for this year.  But now I've got some plans for next year (season)

~Cheers!
