I think this website has a better sunset calculator  http://www.sunrisesunset.com/ I think it should replace the calculator under Tools.
Just enter your zip code then go to customize calendar, then check off civil twilight.  I usually check off everything (OCD).  This is spot on with time you can start, sometimes I start 5 mins before civil twilight.

That's a pretty nifty calendar maker but I still prefer seeing Civil Twilight for the entire year in one glance:

This was made from the site linked to under Tools - albeit the link is somewhat out of date.

Rise is a free cel phone app that gives you sunrise and sunset times for free. (Of course, there are add-ons that cost, but you don't need them.)
Swipe up or down for the sunset and sunrise times. Swipe left to choose a date.

You can swipe right to add  different locations, but you probably won't be using that feature either.

There are other free apps that do the same as well.

SR you sure make little funds go a long way for a great deal of enjoyment for all!  Your Sit & Vue 3 will be great, can't wait to hear when it is up and running.

Thanks Jim,
We are definitely not the most technologically advanced outdoor theatre but we do the best we can with what we can afford.  And don't worry I'll definitely be giving reports when the theater is up and running, which is not that far off really.  We did a special final showing last weekend at the old Sit & Vue, we never did any winter shows before this one, but I really wanted to have a final showing at the old location.

Now we need to take the old wood screen down and move it.  Not a task I'm really looking forward to, to be honest.  But it's one day and once it's moved it will be in the new Sit & Vue for us to use.

I use Sunrise-Sunset to calculate my sunset. This year I have a new projector so I have calculated the sunset for my first movie night (May 29th) then I am using that time to know what my results will be.

i.e. Sunset May 29th is 7:20PM, Sunset for February 25th is 5:30PM. So if I want to start my movie at 7PM on May 29th I will test it at 5:10 on Feb 25th.

We tend to have our movie start at "dusk" A term I have come to use rather loosely.  We aren't open this time of year so a 5:10 start time is not an issue.  All summer long, our rule of thumb is the yard opens at 6:00pm and the movie starts at dusk.  Dusk is determined by when I think it's dark enough to start the pre-show.  Maybe it's not the best way to do it but it's what we have always done.

I use the sunset calculator as well and go by "end of civil twilight" for movie start time. Approximately 30 minutes after sunset. I can start the preshow as early as sunset.
