Title: The Official OOC (O'Shea Outdoor Cinema) Thread
Post by: Mao on June 16, 2007, 09:17:33 pm
The OOC (aka the O'Shea Outdoor Cinema, also known as the "Double-O C") officially launched on June 9th, 2007 with a gala premiere of the original version of "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial"

What a perfect night to open the season! The weather was in the mid-80s during the day, setup was a breeze, the food was awesome and the crowd was loving the show (I think many were skeptical as to what the hell I was doing, but were impressed by the effort I'd put into it).

After the fine folks here convinced me that blackout cloth was a solid way to go (and since the screen ended up being scaled down a bit in size due to throw rate calculations), I put a reinforced frame together with 2X4s and the blackout cloth came in just the way I needed it...seamless! It's a comfy 9' in diagonal and fits the shallow depth of my cozy seating arena nicely.

I have an unassuming little setup and I'm running the dynamic little warhorse (the Optoma DV10 - which throws an awesome picture!) with an optical cord that runs back and into the house to the nearby amp.

I was more than satisfied with my humble sound set-up (rock speakers and the Optoma subwoofer did the trick nicely - it's amazing how effective Virtual Surround Sound is). The pre-show was a big hit with old drive-in commercials, a short, previews of current and coming attractions and the awesome "Welcome To Our Outdoor Theater" piece just before the show!

Again, I need to thank all the fine folks who encouraged, suggested, prodded and helped me along the way!

"E.T." was the perfect choice!

The rest of the regualr season includes:

"Independence Day"
"The Incredibles"
"Wild Hogs"
"Ferris Bueller's Day Off"

Attached are a few pix from the evening:

Cool.  Good planning that 20+ years ago you planted those trees right where you knew you'd need them some day...  ;)

kelemvor,

I love your website...I gotta do that someday soon....

Yeah, I stood outside when thinking it over and it just popped out at me!

******************************************************************

Had a private showing of "Grease" tonight....what a great movie to watch outside! We're having a movie-only night next Saturday of "Hot Fuzz"...it'll be arriving from England on Tuesday and I've heard it's a hoot!

A couple pix from tonight:

Hello Mao, nice set-up.  I'm  a newbie to the forum and I was just wondering where you got the icon with that reads OShea Outdoor Cinema.  I think that it is so coool.  Also you mentioned that you have "Welcome to the outdoor theater" that you play before your movie.  That would be way cool to do. Did you download that or did you have to purchase that from a website.  I've seen website's where  you could order dvd's that have your name already on them.  Just wondering if that was the case with you.  :D

Hey, Bedrock, I like your icon! Great theme.

The 20th Century-Fox like logo is made with a program called Blender. There are a couple of threads about it in the "Pre-show, intros, etc" thread. If you want, I would be glad to make you a still in a matter of a few minutes. The animated flying intro takes many hours, though.

Here's one of mine:

Well, "Hot Fuzz" was a great success! I'm glad I could get away with an R-rated movie in my hood (Language and violence with an English accent just seems more acceptable, I guess!)

Last night saw a cozy, warm, and wonderful screening of "Independence Day" - couple pix below...(I love my Optoma DV10!)

Planning a movie-only screening (all the other screenings are preceeded by BBQs) on July 14 of either "Jaws" or "Ghostbusters"....or "Hairspray" or "Die Hard" or "Rocketeer" or "Back To The Future" or.....the choices are too endless!

Biggest family show of the season last night...drew 15 people into our humble cinemafor a great BBQ/potluck (and a surpise post-birthday party for me!!)

"The Incredibles" is nothing short of an amazing experience in an outdoor setting....

Two weeks off and then a special Hollywood style "sneak preview", then it's on to "Wild Hogs" on August 18th.....can't believe the seaon's halfway done already!!!!

Looks like "Wild Hogs" was the movie of choice for lots of BYT folks. Started the evening off with a great BBQ and buzzed into a strong 25 minute pre-show with trailers, a clip from the new "Hairspray" movie, an animated short and then on to the main feature.

A solid turnout of 12 souls (my neighbors just don't get it yet...)

Some more pics from a great night! (My silly friend Neva needed to show off tonight!)   ;D

Forgive me, I love to post pictures!

Had a movie-only screening of "Mr. Bean's Holiday" (this is available legally in Region 3!)
The family and I had fun!

We officially closed the OOC Inaugural 2007 Season this evening with a sparkling showing of "The Wizard Of Oz", still a magical experience after 68 years!

You know me and pictures....

There were 9 of us at this special screening and Neva even came dressed in an authentic "Dorothy" costume! My dog Brewster even got into the act as Toto....We had a blast!

Here's a few pictures, red slippers and all! Can't wait until next season!

The season has changed a bit and I finally had the chance to grab the camera and snap of few shots of our big family night Saturday. "Horton Hears A Who" was a smashing success! A nice crowd of 16 folks braved a very hot day...when the sun went down, a slight breeze made it all bearable.

Some great new trailers (including HSM3) preceded the feature - a good time was had by all (and it was my birthday, too!)

Attached are a few pix~

Chairman Mao..........

I've always loved your setup as it is 'one with nature' using the trees, very clean, and fits right in with your yard.

Nice.

Along with our shows, we have a "potluck/BBQ/cocktails" event starting an hour and a half before the movie.
There's always a pre-show with shorts / coming attractions and we have some cool stuff this year!

As for the food, we usually do hot dogs or hamburgers, but don't let that stop you from bringing whatever you want to grill: meat, fish, veggies.... there's plenty of room on the grill ! It's all about food, fun, and film!

If you're not grilling, we still ask that you bring a dish to share (a main dish, a side dish or dessert).

As always: it's important to bring mosquito repellent, a jacket, sports/low chairs (or pillows and blankets, if you prefer), movie snacks and whatever you'd like to drink!

More details to come at the end of May!

A gorgeous night under the stars and the biggest turnout in awhile tonight!

(Unfortunately, I think I blew one of the old rock speakers...thankfully, I have a spare pair of new outdoor speakers that have been sitting in a box in storage!) Time to upgrade to new speakers!

For this season, we decided to take out the old brick and railroad-tie patio which had begun to fall into disrepair. Installed a concrete slab and extended it to the sides. The steps up to the house are big enough to sit people on! A wise investment for these summer nights. (Just need to grow grass a little faster - but, that doesn't seem to be a problem this time of the year, does it?)  ;)

One minor hitch: In thinking I had turned the sprinklers off for the night, I inadvertently set them for a test program and they came on for about 2 minutes a half hour before the guests were due to arrive!  :o  Ugh! Everything turned out okay, but there's another thing to add to the checklist!

Full house and the biggest opening night ever....24 people enjoyed the humble OOC for a delightful evening of food, film, and fun - "Oz" is an awesome start to the season; great family fun. I highly recommend it!

For those not aware, the first 20 mins are in full frame black and white, then the screen turns to color and expands to a 2:35 image (see the trailer)...quite breathtaking!

how did you get the speaker wire to the rock speakers? direct burial speaker wire? or speaker wire through a pvc tube?

Title: Re: The Official OOC (O'Shea Outdoor Cinema) Thread
Post by: Mao on June 10, 2013, 03:21:49 pm
Believe it or not, it's regular old sprinkler wire from Lowe's! It's run from the amp inside the house (all my equipment other than the projector is inside the house). It's simply run under the rocks outside of the edging (which we'll probably replace next year).

Wow! I have heard about running speaker using sprinkler wire before. Isn't there some limit to what speakers they can drive though?

Not sure....ran a pair of midsize rock speakers for the first 6 years, then just added bigger ones late last summer.

Do you leave your rock speakers out all season long?  I'm looking for something that I can leave out, and I was just wondering what you do.  Are they loud enough?  If so, which brand are they if you don't mind me asking.

Got them from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007U2GWRG/ref=oh_details_o07_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 <-- These things are solid, heavy and deliver some power!

My philosophy is that, given my location and the proximity of my neighbors, I'm not about to invest in an amazing aural experience for what I believe should be kind of like the drive-in experience.

I don't need 5.1, I don't need a subwoofer...I proudly stand by my humble Dolby Stereo setup!

That said, I think they sound great! I really put them through a workout last weekend and they came through with flying colors. Bass response is solid.

And, yes, they stay out all year in the Colorado winters and summers. One of the two smaller speakers that I blew last year had been out for 6 six years straight, and that after moving them from another location. I love simply hitting the speaker switch, running power and a long video cable to the projector, hanging the screen and I'm ready to go. Again, I build all my shows in advance on DVDs and run them from a Blu-Ray player inside that I use in my living room setup. Full HD is clearly the next phase, but for now, I've never had complaints about the old 480p Optoma workhorse.

All in all, I think a very worthwhile investment if you're not too picky about sound and want something easy.

I have been looking for something that I can leave out all year, and sound decent.  Right now I'm using a set of speakers that I inherited from the father of my first wife, powered by a Sony reciever I bought when I graduated high school. . . . a long time ago.  The speakers were the first set of speakers that he had when he was younger.  They are solid wood, and sound decent, but OLD.  I would like to move in the direction you have headed.  Have equipment inside, speakers I can leave out, and make my screen easier to set up.  I may have to check out those speakers from Amazon.  Can't beat the price.

i've bought my current outdoor speakers from outdoorspeakerdepot.com. mainly because they were local and i picked up the next day. i dont leave them out either plus i didnt want that rock speaker look because i wanted the speakers up higher. so it'd look weird with a rock speaker at ear level.
