Title: 100 ft audio wire run. RCA vs Fiber optic???
Post by: Size_matters on July 10, 2008, 10:47:26 am
Hey fellas -- I have been stalking the site for a while now and I am finally rounding third and heading home ... as it relates to my BYT.

I already have an outdoor speaker system.  So adding the video is relatively easy.  The one problem I have run into is:

I house all of my equipment in my pool house. The receiver, DVD/CD player, TV etc. Unfortunately, the place I want to set up the screen and projector is near my OD kitchen (has a roof to protect projector) 75-100 ft away.  I have decided to simply run movies off of another DVD player that will be housed in the OD kitchen.  This player will feed video to the projector, but I will still need to run audio into the pool house to get the signal to the speaker.

My question: should I run 100 foot RCA cable or 100ft  fiber optics???  Both will be run in conduit.  I have used both sites b4 and they both make great cables.  I am just worried about the length of the run and the degradation of the signal.

Options:

1.  http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10229&cs_id=1022901&p_id=3449&seq=1&format=2

Any help you can provide would be appreciated!!!!

For <$25 it's a no-brainer, I'd be going fiber.

Welcome!

I'd say for $25 I'd go fiber too.

I can't get a good idea of what you're really trying to do. Something to think about (or maybeI'm not seeing right), you may have to deal the problem of the sound and picture not syncing up at those distances. You should be ableot adjust it, bit you might want to pay attention to it BEFROE yo have a lot people over. A dry run would be in order.

Good luck,
Tom

Thanks fellas but this is why the answer is not so simple for me..... There a few out there that beleive you cannot send a signal over FO more than 50FT.  I am getting both sides.  Some say yes, others no.

this is a sktech of my BYT. Hopefully this will clarify things a bit... maybe it will make things worse  ;D

Ok .. so I just got off the phone with bluejeanscable.com and they agreed that there is a chance that that the FO line will not work at distances over 50ft.  They said it was pretty much hit or miss.

The solution would be to go with a coaxial digital audio cable.  I have never used these b4 but he beilives that there will be NO loss.

I will give it a try and report back.

Thanks again for your input.

My option would be from the DVD player run it into an FM transmitter, broadcst to the reciever in the pool house. Set your freq. Your all set.

Digitial audio via coax (S/PDIF) is typically only good for about 50 feet max.  Perhaps much less for some gear.  The distance you can go successfully with digital audio via fiber (Toslink) is about 30 feet max.  Some gear may not make it past 10 feet.  The main reason is the light source used is LED-based and is fairly weak.  If either of these digital options successfully reaches the 75-100 foot mark you need for your run then count yourself lucky.

A 2.4GHz wireless sender/receiver or FM transmitter are viable and easy options, but will reduce fidelity a bit.  Believe it or not, you might fare best with the old-school RCA outputs from the DVD player ran through a single length of shielded microphone cable (see attached pic).  Connect the ground leads of both RCA connectors to the braided shield and the hot leads of the RCA connectors (the center pins) one each to the red and white leads.

I think you can add inline toslink boosters to get about 20m from it.

I never knew such beasties existed:

I agree with hiredpower. I have shopped at monoprice (they are local for me.) they have quality stuff at unbelievable prices.
But the question begs, "Why would there be a FO cable available at 100' if the max distance for FO was only 50'?"

Here is an excerpt from their knowledge base (you can get to it from the link in the first post).

Quote
Question: Are your Toslink Digital Optical cables plastic or glass?
Is one better than the other?
Answer: All our Toslink cables are POF (Plastic Optical Fiber).

For most audio systems, you should not hear any difference between a plastic optical cable and a glass quartz optical cable unless your are at lengths exceeding 100 feet and transmitting at extreme bandwidth levels.

In fact, the performance with plastic has been improving because the Opto-electrical Components (used in Audio Equipment) are designed to interface with POF fibers.

So based on that, it is possible to go 100' with FO. For $25, I would give it a try.
Just as a side question, why not move the receiver to the OD Kitchen where the projector and the dvd player are and just run your rear speaker wire back to the pool house??

Funny that you said that Rooster that is exactly what I am now thinking will be the plan.  I have a ton of speaker wire left and it will be much easier to do that than anything else.

Now the question is simply about the reciever and DVD player.  The OD kitchen has a roof but no sides.  if I put these two devices out there perminently i need to be concerned with the elements like dew or condensation.

Anyone have any thoughts on what I can do to address issues like this?

I have shelving under the counter where I can easily place the reciever and DVD plyr but it is open.  do I need to put a door on it? or will it be ok?

Thanks

No Prob. It's probably because I am in the location stage as well in my thinking.
I have a cheapo stereo next to and a PC under my bar on my covered patio. It has a roof, but no sides.
I don't have a problem with the elements and those components. It's been that way for a couple years now.
But I am in So Cal, so how bad could the elements be?

I guess it's a questions of how paranoid you are. If you aren't that worried, then go ahead and do it.
Otherwise...get the FO cable... ;D
