1  Backyard Theater discussions / General discussion / Re: Another bad start for my BYT year on: June 23, 2017, 05:55:36 am
We had a lot of rain during Apr/May in Virgina that held me up some.  I did get 2 movies in, but then went on vacation for two weeks I was hoping to show a movie tonight but looks like I'll have to cancel it as the rain is here.   Maybe next week.

No worries, it's been a crazy year for my family...  I ordered it online at amazon (they have everything), it was the same make model just not painted like my other one...  I haven't had a chance to take a pic... where did the 1st half of the year go?

So I wound up buying a second winch.  To be honest, it actually works better than having a winch with two line drums, plus I was able to remove a pulley set out that just enabled me to change the lines direction 90 deg.  I always had a leveling problem but now that I can winch both corners up separately, the screen is easier to level.   I may in the next season or two put a weather resistant motor driven one out there, but for now it's even better.   I'll try and remember to take a pic and post it.

One of Ben Aflecks better movies.  Weather was a bit chilly but the rain we've been having here in Virginia let up long enough for me to do this showing.  Took me a bit longer to get going this year as I had some issues with my pulley system to fix, but all was well and was a great outing tonight.

I am still looking and I'll have to take a look and see if they can help.   It'll be a busy year for us (oldest graduating, overseas trip, stateside trips) so my priorities have been shifting it seems every hour.  Hopefully either this weekend or next I can go take a look and see what can be done.  I'm hoping start showing soon as the weather the last few days has been great here I feel the random monsoons will be starting here shortly; but as they say hope for the best, plan for the worst.

I looked at Harbor Freights online store but didn't find anything that piqued my interest. I did see they had a store in the local area.  Still not coming up with what I have in my head and the last time I was in one of the Marina stores the stuff they had was very pricey...  So now I have to figure out where I bought the winch I'm using now and see if I can find a second one to go full on redneck and see what kind of contraption I come up with.

I'll put pics up when I'm done, should be sometime this month (I hope).  All depends on the weather in VA and my schedule, the two never seem to sync up.

I had a thought of buying a second one of the exact same model putting them side by side, then having one long bolt between them so that the crank would wind both drums.   I figured adding some sort of motor on it later wouldn't be too difficult.   And that was if all else failed at finding what I need before rednecking it anymore, lol.

I haven't heard of Harbor Freight but will look into them.  There are tons of marina stores around here but the powered winches are all for big boats and industrial.

The more I use it the more I love it.  It's going to help change the way I do my BYT and other things.  I have the app on my phone and love that I have access to all of my media on the go.  I canceled SirusXM in my car because between the 64GB USB stick and having access to my music on my phone with Plex I didn't need it; and the best thing is I don't have to hear some stupid DJ after every song.

I have a 21.5TB storage at about 55% full.  It took me months do convert all of my CDs, VHS, DVD and Blueray's to digital but it was worth it for the convenience of it all.  I can even "DVR" TV and Movies from over the air and keep it (after a slight bit of editing commercials).

I go overboard with it but even for someone with a small digital collection it can be helpful in a BYT environment.

Now it's just a waiting game to save up enough to buy the PJ with a 50ft throw and a new receiver/outdoor speakers and have a permanent setup... if I can just keep the wife from buying so damn many shoes... lol

So my screen is hoisted between 2 trees via a pulley system with a single drum hand winch.  See my redneck special setup in the pic.  This has worked for the last 2 seasons.  What  I want to do (along with a few other upgrades I have planned) is to replace the single drum hand winch (because the cables get intertwined and causes problems) with a dual drum winch preferably an electric one.  My issue is I can't seem to find one that works for me.  I've found all kinds of stuff but nothing that really works.   Throwing this out here just in case someone has seen or can give me an idea of places to look or even a full on different way to do it.  Thanks for any help.

Didn't see it mention, but I've had great results using Plex.  I now have a DAS attached to my wife's computer and all our movies, old TV shows and music on it.  The player works on all different devices.  Until I am able to buy a new PJ and upgrade my whole BYT equipment, I will still be using my laptop as the source for the PJ.  I wil evenutally use an Amazon Fire Stick or Fire TV directly into the PJ.  For those that like to have music, show pre-views and then the movies, I've had great success with it's playlist racking and stacking it all.

Just thought I mention it as another option for streaming video you may have on hand.  This will take me one step closer to a no setup BYT where I can go out on the deck and turn it on and go to town.
11  Backyard Theater discussions / Projector specific / Re: Projectors? LCD, DLP, LED, 3D What's the answer? on: March 23, 2017, 12:23:52 pm
As someone did for me when I was looking to upgrade my PJ (still mulling over a few) this site helped a lot in decided a PJ: https://epson.com/Clearance-Center/Projectors-for-Work/c/cc302

Like you I have an older PJ and I want to move it where I: A) don't have to set it up, can leave it in a permanent spot B) have a med/long throw lens for a 55" throw.

The Powerlite Pro G series I know have lens options.

That site has helped me narrow it down.  I don't think there's and outdoor PJ that I've seen.  Bulb costs always suck for PJs.

Hopefully it helps.

Besides work and BYT... I'm a little  like Forrest Gump and "I do whatever my wife tells me too"...  she's the social coordinator and usually has things lined up with friends/family and trips...  come BYT seasob, she plans out the weekends around it and gives me dates to work with and usually the friends we hang out with are the ones coming over for the movies... Outside of all that, I enjoy cooking/grilling (I'm the one known for my skills in the kitchen) and I'm a computer nerd whose always trying to read up on the latest thing to implement at the house...

This year will be all over the place.  Our oldest is graduating HS and working to join the Navy...  we have three big trips this year: Greece, Vegas (wife's parents 50th anniversary) and then the wife and I are going on a cruise to the Bahamas...  all of them during the summer which will impact my BYT season...
13  Backyard Theater discussions / General discussion / Re: Rambling about BYT mostly on: December 23, 2016, 02:05:29 pm

It's good to hear from you and wow it would be nice if we could run that late into the winter.  Our typical season is mid-April though most of September.  When are you able to get started typically?

Usually, when the cold and rain stops...  April-ish, but I typically have to cancel scheduled showings until May... Virginia is really temperamental, but it's the effort that counts right... lol...

I love this site and while I don't post often, I do try to get on and read how others are improving and doing it their way.  I'm biding my time to get a new PJ and other equipment in a more permanent setting.  Tear down and setup is the worst part. If I could just walk outside and flip a switch it'd be my regular hangout (even in the cold, that's what a blanket and propane heaters are for right).   I am working on a project right now to where I'm using the Amazon Fire TV and Plex to stream movies and TV shows (like MASH, Cheers, Friends, etc) to all TVs in the house.  This will come in handy when I have a permanent solution for the BYT.   I just held my last showing for the season on 9 Dec... Did a triple header: Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation and Bad'er Santa.

Hadn't posted for a bit and thought this would be a good one to say Hi and what's going on.
