1  Backyard Theater discussions / Website feedback, suggestions, announcements / Re: New Member Sign Up Suggestion. on: May 19, 2015, 01:36:38 am
The forum definitely needs an update and has for a long time.  It will most likely migrate to xenforo.  Initial work has already started but is subject to change if needed.

Yes, my life has changed significantly since we started.  Kids have grown and moved on and luckily for us, both ended up (for now) in the same area about 5 hours away which makes it very convenient to visit both in the same trip -- so we do that -- as much as possible.  That convenience won't last forever.  We don't watch as many movies outdoors as we did the first 15 years or so but the screen is still up and we'll have our first showing of the season in the next couple weeks.

I've said many times on here, this has always been hobby site for me.  I appreciate that some folks would like for it to be more; bigger, more current on technology, more bells and whistles, more users, fewer roadblocks, events, swag...  Anyone who knows me well knows I maintain a fairly demanding load of personal and professional projects outside this site and those are generally the priority items.

The next iteration of the site will be more technologically current.  It needs to be due to device migration and security.  It will be mobile-friendly, responsive design, less noisy, with a good amount of new features I think will appeal to many users.  It's not so much an attempt to gain or impress loads of new members as it is to simply serve members better.

I have a couple projects ahead of this but initial upgrades (offsite to 2.0.10 for those who are interested) and cleanup/migration of some fringe data and testing is already done.  The next step will be the migration to xenforo, configs, break/fix, template/styling, etc.  I'm not prepared to discuss a timetable beyond a test migration to xenforo (offline) in mid-June.

I appreciate the offers of assistance, your suggestions and patience.  No, the site is not for sale.

@mccorkled: As part of the preparation for the upgrade and migration there was a group of users who had been approved but the approval messages hadn't processed.  You were apparently in that group.  If you're not comfortable sending new users here due to activation delays I understand that.  We've had significant problems with vendor and affiliate spam over the years, especially when we've had the attention of some large publications.  Some of those issues will be addressed (and could have been addressed on SMF) but it may be a while before we go to instant activation, if ever again.  I spent a couple years cleaning up after and dealing with (primarily) Chinese B2C shops who wanted nothing more than free forum advertising for their 'sample' products.  We'll be able to loosen things up a bit with a couple new methods but not to the point of that time-sink.

There are some upgrades in the works.

Just out of curiosity what does you screen usually die from?  A tear or something else?

Generally a tear from a tree limb in a storm.  There are trees on three sides of the screen.  After a couple years its lost a good amount of its elasticity anyway but I leave it up all winter and that's hard on it.  I also use a pretty low-tech method of attaching it -- doubling it over once and running a sheet metal screw (with a star washer) through on the back of the frame every 10" or so.  It's pretty tough stuff.

I've used Trapeze from Dazian since 2001 or so and have been very happy with it.  Our screen is up year round and I generally get 2-3 years out of it unless a tree branch makes a trip through it in a storm.  It's partially Spandex so you can pull it tight on the frame.  The elasticity breaks down over time so I re-tension it in the spring and let it ride all summer until it's dead.  It's not opaque like some screen materials so you lose a little gain but that doesn't bother me at all.

If I actually took care of it and didn't leave up through ice storms and such it would probably last a long time.  Smiley

Yeah, the site Stats link has been removed as well and rights to view it have been disallowed:

  http://backyardtheater.com/forums/index.php?action=stats

I hope there's a good reason for that rather than simply censorship or deception.  To paraphrase Darth Vader, "I find your lack of transparency disturbing."

-Sparge-

Straight to deception and censorship, Sparge?

Member access to forum stats and memberlist reports have cycled off dozens of times over the years.  Neither work 100% and especially so since the last bad crash.  Under some circumstances stats causes the site to hang when it loads.  I turned them off late one night this week while I was rebuilding an index.  It has happened many times but I would expect goes largely unnoticed.  They are back on now.  If it causes problems it/they will go off again until things are fixed.

Thanks Randy, I hope you don't feel like I have been to much of nag.  I really appreciate everything you do for us and for the forums!

No, no worries.  I appreciate the heads-up.  I have been less present here than I was the first dozen years or so.

There were a couple dozen accounts approved and activation emails sent over the weekend and Monday.  A new user or two were logged in Monday evening.

If you're reading this and waiting on an activation email, send a note via the Contact Us form in the "Tools" menu at the top of the pages.  Please include the email address you registered with.  Thanks,

Still here but have been off on other things.  I'll make some time this weekend to get caught up a bit on some things here.  Thanks for the concern and sorry for the problems.

Hi Victor,

I edited your post.  It's just the youtube link but not the encrypted version.  Needs http not https.

I misspelled .com in the example below so it will display.

Well, the spring storms did a minor number on the screen this year.  Not as bad as I've seen in the past but going to need a little re-stretching at the very least.

I've (almost) always enjoyed those moments when I realize I have all the pieces at hand and while things aren't optimal, we're going for it anyway.   Smiley

Good luck!

Looks like it's ask going to be too cold for movie watching this weekend but that's not going to stop me from at least doing a sound check.

My monoprice order is coming tomorrow so I should be able to hear what the new speakers and receiver sound like.

That's the spirit.  Smiley  I hope you like what you hear!
