17  Backyard Theater discussions / Projector specific / Re: Need a projector that has a 30' throw distance to hit a 16x9' screen on: January 20, 2014, 07:36:48 pm
my projector says its limited to 25' but it goes further than that on a average movie night. about 28-29'.

30' will barely pass your 30' pool circumference though. with no upgrades you could just move your screen a bit further or at an angle. another way is maybe to change the screen material to a rear-projection-capable

doing a projector upgrade just for the huge throw distance will cost you. you'll have to look into movie theater quality projectors for that

Tronn, my good man, you know this whole Movie-Theme-Party Thing I have going on was totally inspired by your movie parties.
Didn't you dress in a tux for Oscar Night once???

Here's a nod to you and that tuxedo: TUXEDO POPCORN BOXES.

i got tux'ted up for a Titanic themed party although the outfit would work for any multitude of these themed events.   those popcorn boxes are too awesome to pass up! i believe i have one or two Tennesse Tuxedo cartoons i can pair those up with!

gravity is Speed in Space and thats a good thing. however hollywood will always go for the sob story and so it'll probably be nebraska. nothing else on the best picture list is a best picture

would pop rocks stay on popcorn? maybe add a popcorn glaze then sprinkle on the pop rocks?

Receiver is just sittin at frys still.
Suuuuure it is.....

lol. on a surprise note, i actually did receive my screen in today. woke up a bit late and found out it was sitting outside for about a half hour.

needless to say im interested in figuring out how exactly to cut it! also need to find those tarp clips. i think i have an idea where they are...

Thanks y'all. Often times it was just him and I out there till 2-3 am watchin movies, chasing cats (him, not I), and he'd help cleaning up after a big party (mostly eating dropped hot dogs and such). I think (hope) getting back to BYT will be therapeutic for me.

In a bit of theater news, my screen delivery is probably delayed. Turns out billboardtarps.com is based in Minnesota. The state currently under 10' of snow. My package hasn't moved from the fedex facility there since it's been dropped off this past Monday. Receiver is just sittin at frys still. Haven't had time to pick it up. If I do pick it up tomorrow I could have a smaller BYT this weekend but I'm not so sure.

thanks! i do enjoy build threads and gathering fellow users' insights, tips, and tricks and incorporating them into my build. for this re-build, i guess is a better name, im thinking of re-inforcing my original frame. it is currently 1" EMT and i hope to keep it at that due to its weight. what i plan on doing is hopefully adding "legs" to the frame to help support the structure.

my original plan way back did include in-ground concrete with receptacles to receive the frames "legs". this would have allowed the frame/screen to be completely self-standing. the wife nicked that idea though and so i had to improvise by basically hanging the entire frame from 2 sets of wall ladder hooks attached to the roof. worked great but with a small wind the entire frame would bump up against the house wall.

have a few days before my new screen arrives. then have to cut it. then attach some tarp grabbers i have to it. reminds me to order some more tarp grabbers!

heres a shot of the original mega tronn screen ripped:

24  Backyard Theater discussions / Screen specific / Re: Going from Carl's screen to Trapeze...comments?? Pics of your Trapeze screen! on: January 05, 2014, 09:00:01 pm
i've only seen a few pictures of trapeze screens. from what i gathered its breathable so winds wont damage it much. its machine washable so thats a plus. and unstretched its easy to store. i believe its also rear-projectionable. and its about $50 cheaper than a replacement carls BOC screen for 9'x16' (thats the size i had).

i believe you get trapeze only through the manufacturers' site. Dazian makes it.

Happy New Year 2014!

My 2013 BYT ended about july of last year. after your screen rips and your receiver takes a dump you must step back and contemplate things. i focused on my photography and disneyland. my dog passed in early august and really took a toll on me (still is really). photography, movies inside with the wife, and other small things are keeping me in check.

so this is a build thread for mega-tronn 2.0/cine-tronn 5.0. honestly im gettin a bit confused on the nomenclature as well. i should go through all my threads and link em together.

Cine-Tronn 1.0

Mega-Tronn 1.0/Cine-Tronn 2.0

Porta-Tronn 1.0/Cine-Tronn 3.0

Inflata-Tronn 1.0/Cine-Tronn 4.0

so we begin this build thread with the screen. mega-tronn 1.0 was a 9x16 BOC finished screen from Carls Place. due to my laziness, the screen sat outside exposed to the elements a good 2 years. yes it got dirty but with a soft bristle brush and some really mild cleaning liquid, i was able to get most of the gunk out. most of it. one day as i was taking the screen down due to an oncoming wind storm, i hear the most terrifying sound known to a BYT'er! "RRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!". a long gash about 5' in length occured. nothing physically ripped the screen. if you feel the materal next to the rip, you can feel the signs of sun damage. it feels a lot thinner and flimsier than the rest of the material.

mega-tronn 2.0 will take its cue from Frosty's and Underdogs' billboard tarp screens. just yesterday i ordered a big enough sized tarp from billboardtarp.com. sometimes it takes them awhile to get an all white tarp in the right size.

on to the receiver. with some internet research, i found out after my issue that my model pioneer receiver had a design flaw. technically there is nothing wrong with the receiver except that it wont turn on. its either a $100 circuit board or about $50 in parts (plus who knows how much in labor) to fix it. considering i got this receiver for $150 and it lasted 2 years, i think i got my monies worth out of it and wish to get away from pioneers. i believe ive found a receiver im content with. i currently have a yamaha receiver in my living room thats given me zero issues. this model i've found is also a yamaha. its actually an upgrade to the living room receiver. so i'll actually buy this model, upgrade the living room, then that receiver goes outside!

i do believe i'll get that receiver today as well.

megatronn screen just needs a fix up and it'll work. now im considering significantly shrinking down the overall size so the entire screen fits within the roof overhang. it'll still be big but just not that big. if i do go with a smaller size it'll make my options of billboard tarp go up significantly as well.
