Managed to put together a reel of clips from lots of horror movies....threw a sheet in the front window and rear projected through it...lots of compliments and people tended to hang out for a minute of two.
(Yes, that's Riffy and the gang from the "Rocky Horror Picture Show"!)

Very cool stuff in this thread! Great work everyone!
I heard some loud spooky audio from about a mile away Halloween evening and found myself wondering if they also had video, but never found out. It was west of here though, so it wasn't Dano.
Cafemom, are you OK out there? Have been wondering about our SoCal folks lately.

Nope Randy wasn't me. I did my last movie of the season last Sunday night for a friend though. We took the Danoplex II over to his house and they had a church group over with around 100 people. Hay rides, hot dogs and the fixins, bon fire and smores followed by songs around the campfire prior to the movie.
Let me tell ya........it was COLD. Ended up being around 40 deg by the time the movie was over. I kept going to the fire to toast my buns and thaw out. We showed Cars and the kids loved it.

Woo hoo, that was fun!
The theme was A Science Fiction Double Feature Picture Show
Outdoor Screen 1: STAR VIEW DRIVE-IN: Planet Terror (and Death Proof which I hadn't initially planned on)
Indoor Screen 2: MOVIOKE: Rocky Horror Picture Show, Subtitles provided.
This was our 14th annual halloween party and had about 45 folks show up, the kids stayed at home with the sitters.
We set up the drive-in in the driveway with the Falcon. The pic of people in the car is during some of the car chase in the second half of Death Proof. The sound was inside the car and loud so it was real intense but didn't spill out so much so you had to get in the car to get the full effect and this helped keep the neighbors at bay. There are 4 movie characters in the car, Alex from A Clockwork Orange, Sid 'n' Nancy and Willie Wonka is hidden in the back right!
We had planned on a maze/funhouse inside but instead, we set up a stage with screen and hidden TV monitor with subtitles and a small projection screen for the audience (the flash killed the spot lighting and washed out the screen). The MOVIOKE was a hoot, several people got on stage to sing along.
The whole thing wrapped up about 4am.

Halloween has to be my favorite holiday and this year, like last year, I got out my Super 8 projector and screen and showed a couple of films here and there.
Here's a link to a brief YouTube video of the deal.

It's a rough, noisy video, but you'll get the idea.
I put an eBay bid on an InFocus, but got outbid. Someday I'll join you in the digital ranks!

Rosie.........
That shutter noise brings back plenty of old memories, still like the moving dust pieces in the corner of the screen.
You have the creativity and will fit right in here.

We had a blast this Halloween by doing a couple of different garage setups.
The weekend before Halloween, I set up a front projection screen in the garage by using a $12 canvas drop cloth from Lowe’s. I attached the screen to a rack above the door with bungee’s and tarp clips. On the bottom I used a length of 2” PVC that added weight and allowed me to stretch out the corners. I put the projector up in a cabinet so you could walk or dance around in front. I blacked out the windows on the door with furniture blankets so the garage was completely dark. I brought out my 5.1 audio, fog machine, and strobe light. We watched movies all day Saturday and Sunday with the kids and their friends. The fog machine and strobe light added a spooky theme to the party.
On Halloween night, I did a rear projection setup. Again, I used the black furniture blankets (Harbor Freight), and picked up the $1.99 frosted shower curtain from Wal-Mart. I hung the blankets on the sides of the door opening with the curtain in the middle. I used the PVC on the bottom again. This was all done with spring clamps and tarp clips. The winds that night were gusting to 40mph, so I bungeed the bottom to some dumb bells (I finally found a use for them). The whole thing was a huge hit! We showed a DVD from Big Scream TV that has several different spooky characters telling cheesy jokes. It was perfect for the trick or treaters with each joke being 30 seconds or so. The shower curtain worked great with very little hot spotting. We had large gatherings of people standing and sitting on the driveway. Cars would drive by and stop to see what was going on. This is a very cheap and easy way to get an awesome effect that will get the whole neighborhood together.
Both of these setups can be done for next to nothing if you already have the projector and audio. I highly recommend giving it a try. The kids are already talking about next year. Thanks to everyone for all the great ideas!

I know, past the prime here, but just found this thread.
in '06, I built a 24' long pirate ship framework, and used some theatrical scrim for the "sail." I then lit it from the front and back (lights were on a controller/dimmer) so I could make the pirate skeleton hanging from the mast behind the sail "appear" when the front light went off. you could also hit it with your projector and show clips from "pirates" or something like that--you could even find a good closeup on the DVD and "pause" the image and show that on the screen...gives a really cool, haunting/diffuse effect.
I did a 14' diameter flying saucer this year, built from PVC (of course). I won't go into tons of detail here, but I had a bunch of PAR 46 lights inside it on a controller--and with the bottom being black mesh tarp, could also project images out of the underside for the passing kids to see.
took a lot of time, what with the lighting/audio/fog, etc., but was fun!

I made this out of a real pumpkin. I rear projected an image on the face of the pumpkin through a hole cut in the back using a projector.

Just a note the first post on this subject was on 7/17 and I am about to burst with questions. I know it's early but I'm ready if anyone else is. But I promise I won't ask any questions until the 17th...unless someone starts sooner.
