After reading nearly every post on this forum I jumped in and built our own backyard theater.  Had to wait for the nightly rains to end before having opening night.  Everyone was in AWE!!  Shrek Forever After was the selection.
Setup:
9x16 screen made from 10 x 22 recycled billboard tarp stretched around frame built out of chain link top-rail with gate corner connectors and a couple cross braces.  Used 3 4x4 posts for supports sunk 27" in the ground.  2x4 cross pieces added to tie everything together.

Ebay Epson Powerlite S3 projector

Garage Sale Sony surround sound system (HT-DDW670)

Laptop for playing DVD

We had a great day yesterday.  Had my nephew's birthday party from 2:30-7:30.  Movie at 8:30.  We lit all the tiki-torches and also had the pool light on.  A few of the kids ended up watching the movie while in the pool.

Fantastic set-up! I like how the screen is tucked away in the trees like that. Got any pics of where you have the pj set-up in relation to the screen?

Also, LOL @ "Ho-Chunk Casino"

I would call the screen semi-permanent.  The screen sits on ledge of 2x4's and is strapped/bungeed to the support frame of 3 4x4 uprights with 2x4 cross pieces.  (Picture attached) When Hurricane Irene came through we took the screen down and laid it on the ground.

For the projector, I set up a ladder just to the left of the basketball hoop. It is around a 24-25' throw.  I have placed all the speakers(5) on the ladder and people have said the sound was great.

We have run "Shrek Forever After", "RIO", "Space Balls". and "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" so far.  I am planning to show Halloween on Halloween weekend.
