Last Saturday night we had our annual outdoor movie party.  We had a few neighbors over for a barbecue first, and some more friends and neighbors showed up for the movie.  I don't know why, but we didn' t get as big a turnout as usual.  Lots of people travelling.  We thought by having it earlier in August, we would have a better chance of warm weather, but it ended up being a relatively cool day.  No rain, though.  Everyone came prepared and was comfortable.  It was about 58 F for the duration of the show.   It was almost dark enough at 8:30, so we started with a cartoon, a live action short and another cartoon, beginning the feature just before 9:00.  Technically, everything went smoothly.  I usually try to have some improvement to the setup each year, but this year the only improvement was a new Isco zoom lens, that let me adjust the picture to fit the screen more precisely.

My screen is just a plastic tarp that has been painted with flat white house paint to eliminate the shininess.  The problem with it is that the paint doesn't stick very well, and will flake off, particularly if the screen is creased.  To prevent this, I store it rolled  up on a piece of ABS sewer pipe.  It's 10 x 16, on a frame made from EMT and fittings for craft fair booths or party tents.  It is supported at the top by ropes going to my garage, the neighbor's garage, and 2 of the neighbors' fences.

My original screen was 12 x 20, but it was bigger than I could use with the trees and gate in the way, and it was a real pain to set up.  I downsized about 4 years ago.   At first I messed around with various pipe and conduit fittings for the frame before I went to a craft fair and saw the booth fittings, which are strong and go together easily.  The screen attaches to the frame with short Bungee cords.
