Epson Moviemate 72 for First Timer
«

Helping a friend put together his BYT. He found an Epson Moviemate 72 w/100 hours on it for $300 (720p, 1200 lumens, 1000:1). He is using a 120" BOC screen, audio will be through an old school BOOM BOX (capitalized because it is a big monster of a box!). He is here in Phoenix. Will the MM72 be be enough projector? 80% of his viewing will be his DVD collection and the other 20% will be sports via satellite. Looking for input before he buys the MM72.

Epson MovieMates are great projectors. Though I have never owned the MM 72 I did own MM 50 until I recently upgraded to the MM 85hd. Additionally, I have used both the Gemmy 144” and Camp Chef Super Screen 132 for outdoor movies and the picture is always great. The MM 72 should work well with your 120” screen. If there are no issues with the projector I believe that you will be very happy with the purchase. Hope this helps.

My only real concern is the 1200 lumens. Will that be bright enough? We know it will make for later starts, but here in Phoenix, summer starts are later anyway.

Here is what I received by comparing the three projectors on projectorcnetral.com. From my experience with the MM 50 at 1000 Lumens I was able to start the show just as it became dark. However, other sources of light (house or streetlights) would take away from the picture sometimes. With the MM 85HD 2500 Lumens I can watch movies in my garage during the day with my garage door closed even with the windows in the top panel of my garage door. Additionally, outside I can start movies with the MM 85HD a little earlier. As you already know the picture always improves as it gets darker. With your MM 72 you should be able to start as it gets dark and should only see a small degradation form outside light sources.

Thanks for the info. If the budget was there, I'd tell him to get the 85HD, heck, if I had the budget, I'd get one. I think the 72 will work for him. His yard is pretty dark and the only real ambient light is the moon (haven't figured out how to control that yet). $300 w/100 hours on it doesn't sound too bad.

The MM 72 with only 100 hours on the bulb is a great buy and I am sure your friend will be pleased.

My friend got the MM72 on Wednesday. He hasn't used it outside because we've had some rain here in sunny Arizona. We did check it out inside (used a sheet for a makeshift screen) and it didn't look bad at all. The sound was a bit iffy from the built in speakers but he has a boombox and it sounded pretty good through that. When his yard dries out, we'll set his screen and he can join in the madness that is BYT!

Welcome to the Club. Looking forward to the photo’s when you take it outside. Just keep in mind the upgrading never stops. When I got a set of old Bose Roommate II speakers at a garage sell I thought my setup was complete but now a looking at a Fender Passport 150 system. When it rains here in sunny San Diego I just set up the projector and speakers in the garage and watch movies or play video games on a pull down screen that I got for free when a local college upgraded their classrooms. Currently, I have three neighbors who now have outdoor theater systems so this virus has a way of spreading. Just remember to have fun.
